Hot Docs Preview: The Films We’re Most Excited For

Love Apptually

If you’ve ever wondered about the multi-billion dollar industry behind dating apps like Tinder and the effect these apps are having on us, check this one out.

Black Zombie

This film traces how the zombie went from a Haitian spiritual tradition to a Hollywood film genre. This will be one of those films that flips some pop culture assumptions upside-down.

The Tower That Built A City

This doc about the CN Tower will either be a fun story about the last 50 years of Toronto, or it will be a snoozefest about a tower.

The Sandbox

An on-the-ground look at how surveillance and AI are being used along borders to decide who lives and who dies. It alternates between migrants subjected to the system, like those being watched by a drone while their boat sinks in the Mediterranean Sea, and those who are running this faceless tech infrastructure.

American Doctor

We’ve heard bits of stories from foreign doctors working in Gaza while Israel was bombing and invading the besieged strip, but this doc will give a much better idea of what it was like to be there.

Antidiva: The Carole Pope Confessions

Rock icon Carole Pope, who was the lead singer of the new wave band Rough Trade, brought queer desire to radio airwaves in the 1970s and ’80s. This doc should be an interesting look at Pope’s trailblazing career and the Toronto music scene at the time.

When A Witness Recants

Ta-Nehisi Coates investigates a murder in Baltimore, and in the process, as you can imagine, he uncovers a whole lot more about the failures of “the justice system.”

Steal This Story, Please!

A documentary about Democracy Now!? Yes, please! Hopefully we’ll get some new footage of Goodman chasing politicians down through endless convention centre hallways to ask basic questions they’re terrified to answer.
