After winning the Patron’s Pick and Critic’s Pick at least year’s Fringe, Galen Easton is back, but this time with music. In Galen’s Grocer: The Musical, Easton makes a desperate bid for relatability by producing and starring in a sitcom-style commercial, which audiences will recognize as a thinly-veiled knockoff of Kim’s Convenience.
Created by Ian Yamamoto, the show captures the outrage many of us feel about the ever-rising price of groceries, while the billionaire class continues to profit while. The cast successfully captures how billionaires fail at their every effort to seem like normal everyday people, conveying these cringey moments with a catchy musical format.
The story manages to pack a lot into a small timeframe without feeling overwhelming, while the ensemble cast effortlessly delivers its slapstick comedy. It’s is a fantastic evolution of Yamamoto’s already-beloved satirical world.
Galen’s Grocer: The Musical is playing at Theatre Passe Muraille Mainspace until July 12
