As the theatre season winds down, festival season ramps up. And with World Cup soccer happening in June, the vibe will be different this year. I’m curious whether it will impact the festival scene beyond the obligatory price gouging. In any case…
Bealtaine Theatre Festival runs through June 7, showcasing Irish productions like Masterclass, a satire on the “great male artist” trope, and You’ll See…, which promises to be like Ulysses for children (and those who struggle with the original).
The multidisciplinary Luminato Festival (June 3-28) theatre lineup looks fun. Heartbreak Hotel (June 11-14), is a synth-pop show from New Zealand via off-Broadway.. The opera 10 Days in a Madhouse (June 16-21), about undercover journalist Nellie Bly who faked mental illness to gain admission to the women’s asylum on Blackwell’s Island, combines the dramatic American composer Rene Orth with the incisive style of Canadian playwright Hannah Moscovitch. I’m also looking forward to seeing magicians Penn and Teller (June 5-6).
The Toronto Fringe Festival runs from June 30-July 12, for those looking to find the next Kim’s Convenience and other diamonds in the rough. There will be 123 shows (!!) at 27 venues, with the Young Centre for the Performing Arts in the Distillery District as homebase, like last year. Festival fave Jimmy “Potato King” Hogg is back with two shows. Anesti Danelis promises more chaos in his musical comedy Artificially Intelligent 2.0. And beloved sketch group Potato Potato is back to save the world from an alien invasion.
Last, I would be remiss to omit The Vibe Is On, at the Canadian Festival of New Music at Soulpepper (June 6-7) and Parḗlios at the Toronto Opera Festival (June 3-14) at Theatre Passe Muraille.
UPDATE, June 11, 2026: The original description of Heatbreak Hotel had an error, and it has now been corrected.
