As mainstream media was distracted by an overblown “controversy” surrounding a small exhibit about the Nakba (the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in 1948) displayed at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, Israel continued killing Palestinians in Gaza and West Bank.
On July 8, an Israeli soldier shot and killed Ahmad Nasser Saleem, a Palestinian driver for the World Central Kitchen, who was delivering food aid to people in Gaza. Witnesses described the murder as a “field execution.”
Just a few days earlier, an Israeli airstrike killed Mohamed Fawaz al-Wahidi, a Palestinian aid worker who had been organizing public screenings of the World Cup for the displaced people of Gaza. The strike, which occurred about an hour before the highly anticipated matchup between Egypt and Argentina, also killed two boys, ages 8 and 10, and a taxi driver.
That same day in the West Bank, a disturbing video was released showing an Israeli border police officer throwing a stun grenade into a car carrying young Palestinians during the raid of a refugee camp.
Despite the ongoing violence and violations of international law, the Canadian government has not signalled any change to its current relationship with Israel.
